editTips and Tricks

Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write terrifying horror.

  1. Use strong tone and layer it with darkness.

  2. Give antagonists/villians realistic motivation - make them credible.

  3. Incorporate elements of tragedy (e.g., cruelty, danger).

  4. Base the horror on natural/actual human fears.

  5. Note that horror incorporates terror (the feeling of deep fear) but also adds a layer of revulsion and surprise.

  6. Look at horror with a fresh perspective and try new things.

  7. Identify how the events of your story will happen chronologically and how they will happen narratively.

  8. Keep the suspense going.

  9. While it is good to have a plan, don't resist deviating from it - listen to your story and where it wants to go.

  10. The element of the unknown is key.
